Reflecting On Our Love/Hate Relationship With Media

Print Media:
Looking at the comments for the love for print media, it seems that everyone in this course loves reading and holding a book. Books have so much to offer and everyone loves being able to utilize that. Newspapers are the same way. You are able to physically able to hold the paper and read the different stories that were printed. Looking at the comments for the hate for print media there were different thoughts from everyone. With print media, it takes up space and collects dust if not taken care of. It also pollutes our world when people just throw their mail and paper outside. A lot of people don’t realize that you can recycle printed media once you are finished with it.

Visual Media:
There were a lot of different love comments for visual media. One popular choice would be photographs. Everyone loves looking at photos and also taking them. Photographs hold so many memories for everyone that they may not remember until they look at that picture from the past. Music is another popular choice in this category. I think that we can all agree that everyone hates reality shows that people air on television today. Television displays a lot of negative aspects of today and I know that I for one do not like watching it.

Sound Media:
Music is something that everyone loves. What’s great about music is that it comes in different genres so that everyone always seems that have some type that they love to listen to. There are so many ways that people can listen to music such as on the radio, online, or even apps. Something that everyone seemed to hate with this category was loud blaring music that you can’t understand. Commercials are another big thing that a lot of people don’t like.

Digital Media:
There are so many resources for digital media that people can use in and out of school. Social media is a big one for everyone no matter what your age is. Everyone enjoys being able to connect with friends and family across the world. With digital media you are able to communicate with anyone around the world and a lot of apps are free. Looking at the hate comments I think it is safe to say that everyone does not like how easy and available digital media is to everyone to post their views and beliefs no matter how harmful they are. When looking at digital media we really need to make sure that they are reliable. Anyone can posts things online so we need to make sure that we can find out that the source is correct and accurate.

Option #1: Write a personal reflection of your own love-hate relationship with one of the four media forms, considering some of the key ideas that emerged from the classroom conversation.
Being a librarian and having a love for books I would have to reflect on print media. I love the meaning of a book in print. I love holding it in my hands and being able to turn each page once I am finished with it. Before I get a book I like to look through the pages and read different sections throughout just so I can see if I like the way the author writes. I always like looking at my bookmark inside of it so I can see how many pages I have read compared to how many I have left. Another thing that I really like is that I can put it on my bookshelf and either come back to it later or give it to friends for them to enjoy. I feel that you can’t do a lot of these things with online books. Looking at the love that I have for print media I also have a few hate comments as well. Books are so easy to ware and tare. When I take books to the beach they always come back wrinkled from the air and salt water. Someone made the comment about having as many books as you want on one device. When I think about it, it sounds wonderful but it can’t be done with print media. Books can be heavy and when they are just lying around they are dust collectors. Aside from the cons of using print media, I don’t think that I will ever lose my love of being able to read and hold a book.
