I have a love/hate relationship with Common Core so I
decided to focus on the love side. I chose the magazine picture based on common
core being more of a hands-on approach with our students and project based
compared to book driven instruction. I wanted the magazine title to go with the
common core and what better name than Education Today because that is what is place
in our education system. I chose to make the title of the main article in bold
because I wanted it to stick out to the readers. Common core is geared towards
making our students better prepared for the future. The cover shows a classroom
of kids working on different things. There are a group of students on the floor
and some at different tables. It seems that they may be going through different
stations. The students seem to be in elementary school and look like they are
focusing on the different tasks. Looking at this cover I think that I used emotional
appeals, loaded language, and plain folk as the three persuasive techniques. I
used the emotional appeal by talking about children’s future and being
successful. When parents or teachers see something that has children being
successful written on it then they will want to read and see what it is about. Loaded
language was used when it came to the new activities that were offered in the
magazine for teachers to use in their classroom for free. I would say that the plain
folk were used because it talks about what teachers think and how they think
common core is beneficial. I think that when someone would look at this
magazine and see that teachers were interviewed that they would look into it
because teachers are supposed to know best for their classrooms.

Describe the text:
ReplyDeleteStudents taking initiative and working individually on tasks to prepare for the 21st century. This is what I take from the 21st Century School System slogan at the top of the cover, as well as the picture of students working on a variety of tasks but all working individually at different (what it looks like) stations in the room.
What do you see?
I see students working on what seems to be different or various assignments throughout the classroom. I also see that students are working hands on with manipulatives.
Explain the subtexts:
I believe that this magazine is expressing a positive view of common core. Readers would be pleased to see that common core will instill values and skills that will prepare students to work individually to achieve goals and set tasks in the 21st century.
Nice Job on this Brianna! I especially like the picture of the students!
I liked that you chose to view Common Core from a positive standpoint, since that's not a stance I've experienced people take very often. I have no personal experience with the Common Core standards, but what I have heard in the media is always very negative. I think the photo you chose is absolutely perfect for driving your point home. These students are working independently, creating something, and isn't that what every parent wants to see? They also look like they're enjoying themselves, and at the very least they don't look frustrated, which is an image that I think a lot of people have when thinking about students (especially young ones) trying to navigate their way through the Common Core standards. Excellent job!
